About the Program

The business world of the 21st century is one of constant change. New advancements in technology affect how businesses operate and thus the skills that are required of employees. At the same time, employees need to understand the fundamentals of the business world that have been around since the early years of business, such as customer service skills, supervisory skills, and the basics of marketing. The employee who can bring all of these skills to a job will find plenty of opportunities for success and personal growth.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus Applied Business program can provide students with the skills and training they need to achieve that success in today's business world. Whether it be a one-year applied business management certificate program or a two-year associate of applied science degree, our instructors offer a practical understanding of the marketplace of today, not just a "textbook" view of business. Students leave the program with a well-rounded business education that covers accounting management, human relations, math, communications, computers, customer service, law, finance, and logic.

Class sizes are small so as to give students more one-on-one opportunities with our top-notch faculty and instructors. In addition to full-time faculty, we have several classes that are taught by instructors from the local business community. That way, students are learning the ins-and-outs of business from those who live and experience it on a daily basis! Many of our classes are offered in the evening so as to accommodate the needs of students who have daytime jobs.

Admissions Requirements

Students who wish to gain admission into the Applied Business program need to submit a UAF Undergraduate Application for Admission, available at the Tanana Valley Campus Center at 604 Barnette Street, the UAF Office of Admissions, or online from the Admissions Office. To be accepted into a degree program at Tanana Valley Campus, you must be at least 18 years old, or have a high school diploma or GED.

Students will also be required to take the COMPASS or ASSET exam, which tests English and math skills. The test is free and is offered at the Student Assistance Center at TVCC anytime from 8a.m.-5p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information contact our Student Assistance Center at 455-2851or email at fytvc@uaf.edu. Once accepted into the program, you will have an academic advisor that will work with you to help you select your classes. In addition, our Student Assistance Center offers counseling and assistance with financial aid, tutoring, college "survival" skills and more. At the Tanana Valley Campus, we are here to help guide you on the road to success!

Applied Business Majors

Students in the Applied Business program choose from one of five majors. Students who complete the certificate degree can go on to complete their A.A.S. the next year, while students who complete the A.A.S. degree can go on to pursue their Bachelor of Technology degree or a Bachelor of Arts in Rural Development. For degree specifics, please refer to current UAF course catalog.

  • Computer Applications: The Applied Business Computer Applications major provides students with a well-rounded curriculum consisting of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, and Internet/web design. Students will gain the skills necessary to enter into entry or mid-level business jobs that require a strong working knowledge of various facets of the standard office computer. The UAF Downtown Center has state-of-the art computer labs to ensure that students are trained with the most current equipment and software.
  • Entrepreneurship: The Applied Business Entrepreneurship major is geared towards the student who wants to start his or her own business. The program provides the student with the basic fundamentals of small business ownership, including courses on income tax, financial management, small business planning and management, E-commerce, and accounting.
  • Human Resources: Students in the Applied Business Human Resources major will take courses necessary to become supervisors or personnel administrators in offices. The program covers topics such as accounting, supervision, business law, business/professional presentations, income tax, and database/spreadsheet management.
  • International Business: It's difficult to ignore the fact that today's business world is indeed a globalized one. The Applied Business International Business program offers courses in E-commerce, financial management, business and professional presentations, international business, a foreign language, and an in-depth practicum in applied business. The practicum can be done through study abroad.
  • Marketing: About one-third of civilian jobs in the U.S. are marketing related. Even non-business organizations like hospitals, educational institutions, and government agencies understand the importance of effective marketing and increase the number of positions in this field each year. The web has also opened up numerous marketing positions. Many businesses need people with the skills to develop marketing strategies for the web.
  • Public Management: This program is designed in response to a growing need for public service employees. It provides a solid foundation in the principles of employee responsibilities for publicly funded bodies, such as hospitals, schools, government corporations, and not-for-profit organizations. Students gain an understanding of public management, legal standards, and policy making.
  • Tourism: Tourism is the second largest industry in the state of Alaska, accounting for one in eight private-sector jobs. The Applied Business Tourism Program helps ensure that students have the training and skills they need for jobs within this exciting, fast-paced industry. Students spend the summer months employed in visitor industry jobs, which they can earn practicum credit for. Class topics include lodging operations, transportation/logistics management, rural destination development, tourism marketing, international business, and customer service, as well as a special study abroad semester that students can spend in Germany!

Faculty Profiles

Melissa BrownMELISSA BROWN

I've been with for the Applied Business and Accounting Department at UAF for a few years now and couldn't imagine doing anything else. OK, becoming a kayaking tour guide in Maui has crossed my mind once or twice, but only during exam week when I witness the pure stress I put my students through.
When I moved from Delaware to Fairbanks in '92, I not only found the University, but I found my husband, as well. So, when not working, I'm usually with Sean and our daughter, Alex. Since my family and I consider play just as important as work, we've found there's no place better than Alaska for canoeing, fishing, snow machining and skiing with friends.
While I love being in the classroom, I've become very excited about teaching web-based courses. This is a new aspect of our program, so please contact me if you're interested in pursuing your degree online.

A professor at UAF in Applied Business and Accounting by day, and an entrepreneur by night, I have also served as the University's Statewide Personnel Manager, Director of Admissions, and Director of the Small Business Development Center - looks to me like I have a hard time holding a job…. I'm certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resource Management and licensed by Franklin Covey as a time management instructor. Anyone who knows me will attest that I am certainly certifiable. I've won the College of Rural Alaska's Nancy Mendenhall Award, last year the UAF student body named me Faculty of the Year, and this year I won the Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award… Despite repeated requests by students and administration, I haven't yet given back those awards… After spending 4 years as a sophomore at the University of Hawaii majoring in the academic discipline of surfing, that University strongly recommended Aloha to me and I moved to Alaska where, on the 12 year plan, I - somehow - finished college, settled down, bought a motorcycle, took up racquetball - and got tennis elbow. I've been married to my wife for 27 years, have two adopted children who are now 16 and 18 - and rumor has it that my wife, Marylee is being nominated for Sainthood by all who know me and our kids.

Andy AngerANDY ANGER

Born in the Black Forest in Germany, the wanderlust got a hold of me early on. After graduating from high school I packed my bags and traveled through Australia for 9 months before my father sent me off to Law and Business School in Bayreuth, Germany to make a proper citizen out of me. Only being able to sit still for three years, I was off again, this time to the New World - America. My father let me go only because I promised him I would study business as an exchange student at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Well, I held my promise but also engaged actively in discovering the New World. Two of my great discoveries were my wife Donna, who I met while studying in Nebraska, and the 49th State - Alaska. Since 1993, I have been able to combine my two great discoveries and I am enjoying the great state of Alaska together with Donna. Now, being part of the exciting, fun and dynamic Applied Business Team with Melissa and Charlie adds a third unbeatable dimension. I couldn't ask for more - besides maybe catching that record trophy trout in a beautiful undiscovered mountain lake… fly-in only of course.
