Technical Support Contact Information

Our labs at TVC are supported through TVC's own Help Desk personnel. If you have technical support needs for your class you should fill out and submit a help request form at www.tvc.uaf.edu/help, more urgent needs can be satisfied by calling one of our IT support technicians listed below.

The TVC IT personnel office is in the TVCC building in room 204. Contact names and numbers are as follows:

Reporting Technical Problems

If there is a problem in one of the labs, please let one of our IT support technicians know about it. Problems often persist much longer than they need to simply because our technical support staff was never made aware of the problem. Please fill out the Help Request Form . Also be sure to leave some way for our technical support staff to contact you in case they need more details about the problem.

Getting Software Installed for Your Class

If you need special software loaded on the computers for the class you are teaching it is important that you let the IT staff know when they e-mail faculty with a request for software on the lab computers. Images are developed for each lab several weeks prior to the start of the semester. If you are aware of delays in getting the software for your class, let the IT staff at TVC know so they can coordinate getting this software installed. Adding additional software to the computers after these images are created is extremely time consuming and may not be possible by the time you need it for your class given the time constraints and other responsibilities our technical support staff face. Please do not come to us just before the semester begins with software that must be installed on the computers to support your class.

Please be aware that all of our lab machines are in a "frozen" state and will not retain any information saved to them after reboot. You may feel free to make changes in your classes or install anything that does not require a reboot to function. When the machine is restarted, it will all disappear.

UAF E-mail Account

Getting a UAF faculty e-mail account enables you to use Faculty Web Server at UAF. You will also use your account if you plan to use the Blackboard system available at UAF. As soon as you are on the payroll, you will automatically be assigned an e-mail account from UAF. To find out your username and activate your account you will need to go to go to the activation page and fill out the details there.

The Office of Information Technology at UAF has a nice page with all the information you will need about all the various accounts will will have at UAF once you are a faculty member. This is a good resource for you to utilize.

You should either check this e-mail regularly or forward everything sent to it to an address of your choosing so that, should students choose to contact you in this manner, you will receive their mail. They may look you up at UAF EDIR and the address shown will always be the UAF address you were assigned.

UAF WebMail

WebMail (aka SquirrelMail) allows University of Alaska Fairbanks students, staff and faculty to read and send e-mail through a web page interface rather than e-mail client software installed on your computer. This is especially useful when traveling.

Forwarding your UAF E-Mail

You can forward your e-mail account so that any e-mail sent to that account will be forwarded to a preferred e-mail account address. This may be useful information to pass on to your students if you are using Blackboard in any of your classes, as it is policy that only UAF e-mail address be entered into the Blackboard system -- having the students forward their UAF e-mail to a preferred e-mail address will provide you an easy way to be assured students are receiving any e-mail sent from your class site on Blackboard.

Information regarding mail forwarding, setting vacation Messages, changing your e-mail password, or general e-mail account maintenance can be found on UAF's Usermin Page Usermin is a handy web interface that will facilitate common E-Mail account tasks such as setting a Mail Forward or Vacation Message. Other tasks are also facilitated by Usermin, such as setting up SSH or checking your disk quotas and changing your password.

The e-mail address that is displayed to the right of your name on the Faculty Web Server is created automatically based on your UAF e-mail address. If you do not use this e-mail address and would like to have a different e-mail address displayed, contact UAF Computing and Communications help desk at 474-6564.
