What is Tech Prep?
The Tech Prep program is a partnership between the UAF Tanana Valley Campus and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. It allows high school students to receive college credit at UAF by successfully completing specific, pre-approved courses at their school. Those credits earned will allow students to:
- Go directly to work or into a training program requiring an entry-level technical skill;
- Continue to work towards a university certificate or degree while using technical skills in the workplace;
- Attend UAF with a head start towards a certificate or a degree;
- Transfer credits from UAF to another university or college.
Abundant Opportunities
Tech
Prep students will have the opportunity to take advantage
of UAFs multiple services for students, including:
Academic Advising Center
Career Services
Educational Opportunity Center
Learning Resources Center
TVC Student Assistance Center
Departmental Advising
UAF and TVC can work with your school counselors to assist you in developing educational plans consistent with career and life goals, and to provide you with the information and skills needed to pursue those goals.
The best part of Tech Prep? The cost. You only pay $25 per credit. If you were to take a similar class at the university, you would be paying around $384 per course. You can earn college credit AND pay next to nothing to do so---now thats a deal!
Many Programs, Many Choices
The classes available for credit will vary from school to school, but in general, they are taken from the following areas:
Automotive and Diesel Mechanics- Aviation Maintenance Technology
- Human Services
- Computer Information Office Systems
- Office Management and Technology
- Health
- Drafting
- Accounting
- Emergency Medical Services
- Welding
In addition, there are many other classes at your high school that you may be able to receive college credit for, such as advanced placement classes. For more information contact your high school counselor.
