About the Program

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus (UAF-TVC) offers a one-year certificate program in Aviation Maintenance Technology. This intensive curriculum uses hands-on laboratory instruction to prepare students equipped with complete and well-rounded training for entry into the aviation field.

After completing the certificate program, students are eligible to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examination for the airframe and power plant rating. The exam qualifies students for entry-level positions in aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification. In addition to a certificate in aviation maintenance technology, UAF also offers a certificate in airframe or power plant only.

After receiving a certificate, students may elect to complete the associate of applied science (AAS) degree in maintenance technology. This option is also open to students who have an FAA mechanics certificate, regardless of how or where it was obtained.Power Plant Maintenance

Students who have completed an AAS degree may elect to continue their education by completing a bachelor of technology (BT) degree. Another option available to students is to continue their training in Calgary, Canada, at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Students completing six classes at SAIT can qualify to sit for the Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineer license.

Students are encouraged to pursue the degree or certificate program. However, students do have the option of enrolling in individual classes on a space-available basis. Unlike other degree programs at UAF, which begin in fall and spring, the Aviation Maintenance certificate program begins in late May. Students pursuing the AAS degree may start their program at the beginning of any semester.

Facilities and Instructors

The program, located in the newly renovated Hutchison Institute of Technology on Geist Road is just minutes away from Fairbanks International Airport and the UAF main campus. With more than 12,000 square feet of shop, classroom, and office area, the space has been organized to give students every possible learning advantage. The shops are designed to make work efficient, and the entire facility is equipped in keeping with the latest industry needs and practices. Students learn the necessary skills on the appropriate equipment.

Class size is limited, to facilitate individual instruction and attention. Instructors are all experienced aviation professionals. Not only do they have excellent technical skills and knowledge, but they also know how to communicate their knowledge and skills to students.

Career Opportunities

Most aviation maintenance graduates choose to work in general aviation (small aircraft). Many have gone on to become lead mechanics, shop foremen, and directors of maintenance at various FAA Part 135 (Air Taxi) Operations.

Local employers of TVC graduates have included Tanana Air Service, 40 Mile Air, LTD, Bering Air, Frontier Flying Service, North Slope Borough Search and Rescue, Everts Air Fuel, Northern Air Cargo, Larry's Flying Service, Wright's Air Service, Air Logistics, Tamarack Air LTD, Tundra Copters, and Warbelow's Air Service.

For assistance in career opportunities, UAF Career Services maintains a job placement office. In addition, many employers call the AMT program coordinator on a regular basis requesting information about recent graduates.

Admissions Requirements

To gain entry into the program, students must complete a UAF Undergraduate Application for Admission. The form is available at the TVC Student Assistance Center at 604 Barnette Street, the Office of Admissions in Signers Hall on the UAF campus, or online at the following website:
http://www.uaf.edu/admissions/index.html.
A non-refundable fee of $40 is due at the time of application. Students must submit official transcripts from all high schools, colleges, and/or universities previously attended.

Students must arrange for a program interview with an available faculty advisor from the program. Students who are admitted to UAF will be accepted into the AMT program following the interview, on a priority basis. Because of our limited facilities, we can only permit 25 students into each certificate program class .

Scholarships

The Don Berry and the Fritz Ebert Scholarships are awarded to students demonstrating academic excellence, financial need, and commitment to the AMT program.

The Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation will award a $500 aviation scholarship each spring. This scholarship was established in memory of Alaskan aviators by their families. The scholarship is available to students who have spent at least two of the last three years as an Alaska resident, and who have completed at least 30 percent of the work toward their professional goal or have a private pilot certificate.

Students may be eligible for other forms of financial aid, such as Pell Grants and federal loans. For information or other financial aid contact TVC Student Assistance Center at 455-2851 or fytvc@uaf.edu.
