Program Information
The Radiologic Technology program is a joint effort of the UAF Tanana Valley Campus, the University of Alaska Anchorage Career and Technical College, and the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. All of the coursework to obtain the A.A.S. degree may be completed in Fairbanks. General education requirements can be met by completing courses at UAF. Students will be admitted to UAA for their radiologic technology courses on a competitive basis, and the degree will be awarded by UAA.
The program offers students the theory and clinical education to perform basic x-ray and imaging procedures. Course content is designed to meet the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accreditation standards and to allow students to be eligible to apply for national certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). A registered radiologic technologist is qualified to perform general radiological procedures and assist physicians in special procedures in hospitals, clinics, and physicians offices. A student who desires additional credentials in magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasound or other specialty areas may seek additional training.
About the Curriculum
The program combines theory and clinical practice beginning in the first semester. Some classes will be offered by local faculty; others will be delivered via audio conference by UAA faculty. Computer resources will also be utilized. Students will gain their clinical experience through laboratory work and practicum experiences at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Tanana Valley Clinic, and Bassett Army Hospital at Fort Wainwright. Students will complete approximately 1200 clinical practicum hours during the course of their study.
The program consists of 26 credits of general education in a five semester sequence of radiologic technology classes. Three of the general education classes are prerequisites for admission to the program, the other general education classes may be taken concurrently with the radiology classes. Most students will choose to complete all or most of the general education classes prior to application for admission to the radiologic technology program.
Career Opportunities
The outlook for employment for radiologic technologists (RT), and particularly registered RTs, is excellent. In fact, both Alaska and the nation are experiencing a critical shortage of RTs. Although the state of Alaska does not currently require that RTs be licensed or registered, hospitals and clinics strongly prefer to hire those who are registered.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Radiologic Technician program is competitive. Students will be considered after a completed application has been received, and will be ranked based on academic preparation, completion of prerequisite courses, written and oral communication skills, personal interview, and experience.
Students will apply to UAA for admission to the radiologic technology program after they have completed their prerequisite courses. Information about the admission process and the application packets are available from the Allied Health department at TVC or by contacting the program coordinator, Rose Carroll, at ffrmc@uaf.edu.
Students who are accepted to the program will need to hold a current first aid/CPR card for professionals or BLS-credential, and demonstrate proof of immunizations (Rubella, Rubeola, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Hepatitis A and B). Freedom from tuberculosis must also be demonstrated.
