About the Program
The Healthcare Reimbursement certificate program at the UAF Tanana Valley Campus prepares students for employment and improves the skills for those currently employed in the medical field. Medical billers and coders are employed in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, and other medical facilities.
Students in the program will be instructed in the analysis of medical records and the assigning of codes for indexing diagnoses and procedures to provide information for reimbursement purposes. The successful completion of this certificate also prepares the student for national certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding exam and the American Academy of Professional Coders exam.
Facilities and Instructors
The Healthcare Reimbursement program uses classrooms at the Tanana Valley Campus Center at 604 Barnette Street. Hands on clinical training may be offered at physician's offices and clinics, and other health facilities. Class sizes are intentionally kept small so that you receive highly individualized one-on-one training from our outstanding faculty and instructors. Our faculty and instructors have years of experience in the allied health industry, which means you will be learning from the very best!
Career Opportunities
Medical health delivery is changing and health care providers are being challenged to deliver quality patient care as well as containing the rising costs. Managed care programs, loss of insurance and reduction in benefits, and cost containment measures have amplified the market for competent and well-trained medical billing and coders. Medical billers and coders are trained in the latest procedures, legal and ethical standards, as well as reimbursement and collection techniques. This is a vital component of the health care industry and essential to the reimbursement aspect of the medical practice.
Third party billing and compensation procedures are constantly changing and their application and comprehension has become a specialized field. Qualified medical billers and coders have become a valuable asset to the medical profession and assist the physician in proper documentation and reimbursement, freeing up valuable time for the patient care. Knowledge in billing, insurance and collection techniques increases office income and alleviates audits and legal compensation issues.
A position within the profession of medical billing and coding requires a wide spectrum of knowledge gained through education and experience. Graduates of the program in Fairbanks may choose to pursue an administrative career in a variety of settings including: private medical and dental practices, group practices, clinics, corporations, hospitals, public health, rural settings, education, insurance companies, armed forces, and consulting companies.
