UAF Community and Technical College/Programs/Interior Alaska Career Academy

The Interior Alaska Career Academy through the UAF Community and Technical College(CTC), in partnership with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and University of Alaska Workforce Development, offers career exploration classes to high school students who want to expand their opportunities and learn about technical fields in high-growth, high-demand areas that can lead to successful career opportunities.

Each session will accept 15 students. Students should be 16 years of age and juniors or seniors in high school with a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students will earn one (1) UAF/CTC credit for successfully passing each session. At the completion of two sessions, participants may earn 0.5 high school elective credits. The student cost per session is $200.

Scholarships may be available to qualifying students. If you are applying for a scholarship to assist with up to $100 of your $200 course cost, please attach an essay stating how you plan to use the training and why you believe you are a good candidate for this scholarship. Please turn in your essay at the time of course registration. Scholarship essays will be reviewed as funds become available. You will be notified at least one week before the course begins if you have been selected for a scholarship. * All fees owed for the course must be paid before the first day of class.*

2010 - 2011 Academy Sessions

Introduction to Aviation (Oct. 1-2, 8-9, 15-16 & 22-23)
(1 Credit)

Hutchison Institute of Technology, one Saturday each at Ft. Wainwright and Eielson AFB
Fridays: 4:00pm-6:00pm Saturdays: 9:00am-5:00pm
Think airplanes are cool? Have an interest in what it takes to make them fly? Come experience different aspects of the aviation industry in action in this hands-on and very interactive course! Students will learn and perform some basic aircraft maintenance tasks, learn about aviation history and basic aerodynamics, and get a taste of what it takes to succeed in this demanding industry. This course will explore aircraft maintenance, air traffic control and commercial piloting as career options. Due to the level of hands-on and off-site activities, enrollment is limited to 12.

Community Emergency Response Certification & Police Academy (Dec. 27-31)

Impress future employers with this certification and training! Community Emergency Response Team Training is a 20 hour certification which includes topics such as disaster preparedness, terrorism, fire safety, disaster medical operations and search and rescue operations. This certification qualifies you to assist a team in your community with emergency response situations. The remaining 20 hours will be an abbreviated law enforcement academy, designed to give students an introduction to police procedures and tactics. Students will get handson training in a variety of areas, including Crime Scene Investigation, Arrest and Search Techniques, Forensics, Radio Operations, Police K9 utilization, SWAT Team Operations and much more.

Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (March 14-18, 2011)

Safety is becoming increasingly important in today’s workforce whether you go to work for a small local company or large global organization. Employers in the oil and gas, mining, utilities, and disaster response fields all require you be a safety conscious worker and many now require certifications. This academy will allow you to earn a certification and make you more employable. The Occupational Safety& Health Administration regulations are designed to help you have a long career free of injury and accidents. In this hands-on workshop we will visit job sites to see how they comply with mandated safety regulations and see how you can be a part of this very important, exciting and fast growing career field.

Students wishing to get high school as well as UAF credit may fill in a school district Outside Credit Form *prior* to taking the course. Two Interior Alaska Career Academy courses will make you eligible for .5 elective high school credit.
