Information Technology Specialist (ITS) Program
Undergraduate Certificate Overview
The ITS undergraduate certificate program focuses on teaching students the essential skills required to effectively use and troubleshoot computers and computer applications.
Students must complete 33 credits of coursework to earn an ITS undergraduate certificate. Coursework will be taken from the following areas:
- All UAF undergraduate certificate students must complete 9 credits of general study coursework in the areas of communication, computation, and human relations.
- All ITS certificate students will complete a 12-credit core course series that is intended to develop comprehensive skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Use and Configuration of PC Operating Systems
- Office Applications
- Internet Technologies
- ITS certificate students will complete their major area of study by working with an advisor to select 12 coursework credits that support their career goals and interests.

Areas of Study
The undergraduate certificate program provides students the flexibility to customize a certificate or pursue an emphasis in the following specialty areas:
- Computer Applications
Students will develop skills to effectively use essential applications found in nearly all job environments. This grouping of courses also maps to an A.A.S. degree in Applied Business with a concentration in Computer Applications.
- Web Technologies
Students will develop foundation level skills in website development and maintenance. This grouping of courses will teach students how to effectively employ the applications used to develop and maintain websites.
- Desktop Publishing and Graphics
Students will develop foundation level skills in desktop publishing and graphics. This grouping of courses will teach students how to effectively utilize the applications used to produce publications and graphics for a variety of uses.
- Technical Support Assistant
Students will develop skills necessary to support and troubleshoot their own individual system and will possess the knowledge to provide assistance to IT professionals responsible for implementing, supporting, and troubleshooting computer and information technology systems with a scope larger than a user’s individual system. This grouping of courses maps to the Information Technology Specialist A.A.S. degree.
Undergraduate Certificate Competencies
Individuals preparing for any type of employment will be expected to possess the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively use computers and information technology systems. The ITS Certificate is built around a set of competencies intended to teach students the technical skills and knowledge necessary to effectively use computer and information technology systems for their own personal use. Students who earn the ITS Certificate or Degree will develop the following skills:
- Technical skills that effectively use computer applications, operating systems, and hardware. Students will learn basic networking and computer troubleshooting skills.
Individuals who develop these technical competencies will possess the skills and essential knowledge required to become more competitive candidates for any jobs involving the extensive use of computers and information technology.
