Information Technology Specialist (ITS) Program
Associate of Applied Science Overview
The ITS A.A.S. program is designed to prepare individuals to implement, support, and troubleshoot computer and information technology systems.
Students must complete 60 credits of coursework to earn an ITS A.A.S. degree. Coursework will be taken from the following areas:
- All UAF A.A.S. degree students must complete 15 credits of general study coursework in the areas of communication, computation, and human relations.
- All ITS A.A.S. students will complete a 15-credit core course series that is intended to develop comprehensive skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Supporting and Troubleshooting Computer Operating Systems
- Configuring and Troubleshooting Computer Hardware and Software
- Supporting and Administering Computer Networks
- Providing Computer Support
- Independent Project
- ITS A.A.S. students will complete their major area of study by working with an advisor to select 24 coursework credits that support their career goals and interests.
- ITS A.A.S. students will complete 6 credits of general electives. These general electives can include additional computer and information technology courses.

Areas of Study
The A.A.S. degree program provides students with the flexibility to customize a degree or pursue an emphasis in the following specialty areas:
- IT Technical
Students will develop professional level IT support skills with an emphasis in supporting network infrastructure and system administration. Students completing this grouping of coursework will also prepare for a number of industry recognized IT certifications.
- Web, Desktop Publishing and Graphics
Students will develop professional level IT support skills with an emphasis in website development and maintenance, desktop publishing and design, and computer graphics.
Opportunity for IT Certifications with the A.A.S. Degree
The ITS A.A.S. degree program provides students the opportunity to select courses that meet degree requirements and prepare students for the following industry certifications:
- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Network+
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)

A.A.S. Degree Competencies
Individuals preparing for employment as an information technology specialist must develop technical, professional, and soft skills required for the career field. The ITS A.A.S. degree program is built around these competency areas and students graduating from the program will develop the following skills::
- Technical skills in the areas of applications, operating systems, hardware, networking, and troubleshooting.
- Professional skills in the areas of independent thinking and research; computer support skills, professional practices, and project implementation and management.
- Soft skills in the areas of written and oral communication, critical thinking, computation, and human relations.
Individuals who develop this full range of competencies will possess the skills and knowledge necessary to become highly competitive candidates for job openings and promotions within information technology or related fields.
