What is credit for prior leaning?
If you have developed skills that are equivalent to one of our CIOS classes through work, life, or training, you can document that experience and receive college credit. For example, if you have developed a comprehensive professional-level web site, you could produce a portfolio documenting your web design skills, and then, by following the credit for prior learning process, receive college credit for your skills.
How do I earn credit for prior learning?

For examples of the course competencies see the TVC ITS Web Site at www.tvc.uaf.edu/its/competencies/. The course competencies can be evaluated with the assistance of a CIOS faculty member.
How can I document my prior learning?
A combination of methods can be used to document the acquiring of course competencies:
- A portfolio of work
- Professional licenses or certificates
- Successful completion of training programs
- Testing
- Projects or tasks
- Interviews and demonstrations
- References from clients
How much does credit for prior learning cost?
The Credit for Prior Learning Application Fee is $50
A $10 per credit fee for each credit that is awarded through credit for prior learning will be charged.
What are the limitations to credit for prior learning?
No more than 25% of a degree program can be awarded through credit for prior learning.
What are the practical steps to receiving credit for prior learning?
- Look at the current CIOS courses and competencies.
- Choose a class, or classes, in which you have experience or knowledge that matches the current course competencies.
- Meet with a CIOS faculty member to develop a plan to document your competencies. (Tanana Valley Campus students who want an appointment should contact Keith Swarner at keith.swarner@uaf.ed)
- In implementing your plan, use this handout and the Credit for Prior Learning information available from the UAF Academic Advising Center at www.uaf.edu/advising/student/
- Fill out the Credit for Prior Leaning Application Form and turn it in to the Business Office ($50 Fee)
- Create a portfolio that documents course competencies
- Turn in the portfolio to the faculty member who will evaluate the presentation. The criteria for evaluation will be how the portfolio documents the course competencies.
- After the portfolio is evaluated, the Credit for Prior Learning form will be submitted to the Campus Director for approval and then submitted to the Business Office. The final submission goes to the Academic Advising Center.
- Tanana Valley Campus students who want further information or an appointment should contact Keith Swarner at keith.swarner@uaf.edu
